Join us on Tuesday, September 24th at noon as we take a close look – and we mean a very close look – at Wharton Esherick’s Flat Top Desk. This iconic piece was originally built in 1929 and went through numerous changes, with its final walnut top completed in 1962. In preparation for carefully moving this large desk out of the tight quarters of Esherick’s Studio for The Crafted World of Wharton Esherick exhibition at the Brandywine Museum of Art opening on October 13th, we explored whether we could safely remove the walnut top. Not only did we successfully remove the top, but we made a lot of discoveries along the way. What we found beneath the desk’s honkin’ walnut slabs was more exciting than we could have imagined! In this talk, we’ll explore our findings from this deep dive, from information about its original aluminum top and the clever locking mechanism to design drawings and archival photographs.

This is a free online event; advance reservations are required. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the conversation. Please register below to receive instructions on how to join us! If able, please consider a $5 donation to support our ongoing programs. Donate HERE.
