Esherick’s iconic studio is not just his best-known artwork, but also includes the most experimental and unconventional examples of this artist’s approach to using multiple materials in a single “object.” Inspired by our 2021 juried woodworking exhibition, Wood And…, in this 20-minute program we’ll highlight a few key examples of material exploration in Esherick furnishings, with a focus on moments of innovation and the unifying of materials found in his one-of-a-kind home and studio. From stone sourced at local quarries and scavenged beams to rawhide lampshades and curving stucco, we’ll take a fun, head-to-toe look at the materials Esherick combined to construct this building like no other.
