Experience the Studio

The Wharton Esherick Studio is experienced through guided tours that must be reserved in advance. Visiting the Wharton Esherick Museum on the Guided Studio Tour is an immersive experience which takes guests through the home/studio of Wharton Esherick preserved much as it was when the artist lived and worked there.

The Guided Studio Tour is our primary tour offering and great for returning and first-time visitors! Tours last about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. Tour size is limited to about 10 people per tour. Tours begin on time. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your tour starts. The Museum does not guarantee that you can be placed on a later tour or that your tour can be honored if you are more than 15 minutes late. Walk-ins cannot be accomodated.

Things to know before you visit

  • All guests must have advance reservations to enter the Museum. Walk-ins cannot be accomodated.
  • Low-heeled shoes only please! This helps protect our floors. Guests may be asked to wear shoe covers (over their shoes).
  • Casual photography is permitted on tour (no tripods please). Videography is prohibited.
  • You are allowed to touch large wood surfaces at the Wharton Esherick Museum and we encourage you to do so! However, for the safety of our collection, please refrain from touching anything made from other materials. Additionally, please do not pick up any objects or open any doors or drawers of the furniture — your docent will gladly demonstrate the furniture for you!
  • Food and drink are not allowed inside the Museum.
  • Large bags and backpacks are not permitted in the Museum. If you bring them along, you may be asked to return them to your car.
  • The immersive nature of the Studio, with nothing behind glass or velvet ropes, can be confusing for kids (and adults too!). Please help us keep our collection safe by talking with your family about our Museum guidelines.

Wharton Esherick’s studio residence is his most iconic work and we are committed to enabling all visitors to experience this special space.

Due to the historic, hand-built nature of the building and a spiral staircase which connects an upper and lower level, portions of the studio are not accessible for individuals who use wheelchairs or have other mobility issues. In lieu of navigating through these spaces physically, we provide printed or digital material as a way of exploring these spaces.

Accommodations can be arranged in advance for visitors of all needs and abilities including individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, those who are blind or have low vision, or other intellectual, developmental or sensory specific needs.

Care partners who accompany visitors are admitted free of charge.

Service animals are welcome at the Museum.
