The Mortar Between the Stones Tour: Stories of the Studio

Have you ever wanted to hear Wharton Esherick in his own words? The Wharton Esherick Museum’s Mortar Between the Stones Tour: Stories of the Studio brings the artist’s Home and Studio to life! This sensory experience draws on WEM’s rich collection of over one hundred oral history interviews that were recently digitized with funding from the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, giving visitors the opportunity to hear stories told by Esherick and the friends, family members, collaborators, and clients who helped build the hillside into what it is today.

This 60-75 minute tour offers first-time and repeat visitors alike an in-depth look at Esherick’s Home and Studio with WEM staff, plus behind-the-scenes access to recorded stories and accounts from the Museum’s special collections.

The Mortar Between the Stones Tour: Stories of the Studio development began as a joint endeavor with Geoffrey Berwind. The co-creator and director of the award-winning Once Upon a Nation storytelling program in Philadelphia, Geoffrey is the grandson of Esherick friends and patrons Nat and Rose Rubinson, whose commissioned works include the iconic Esherick music stand.

Enjoy this glimpse into Esherick’s own storytelling in a clip taken from WEM’s oral history:
